Cane furniture earned its reputation the hard way. Woven rattan has been used in furniture making for well over two centuries because it does something no solid panel can: it carries weight while staying light, and it breathes, so a chair back stays cool to lean against on a warm afternoon.
Every cane panel in this collection is woven by hand and set into a routed groove in the frame — the traditional method. It is slower and more expensive than gluing a sheet of machine-woven webbing onto the surface, and it is the difference between a panel that lasts decades and one that lifts at the edges within a year.
Cane wants humidity. In a very dry room it can become brittle over years, so keep pieces away from a radiator or a direct heating vent. Dust with a dry brush and, if a panel starts to slacken slightly in summer, it will usually tighten again on its own as the air cools.
